Last year Jay-Z made a blip and a half with his featured verse on DJ Khaled’s track ‘God Did’ in which he rapped about his rags to riches journey – from struggling artist to Hip Hop’s first billionaire!
The lyrics inspired a lot of online discussions, and Jay-Z recently jumped into the mix on Twitter Spaces to drop a few more pearls of wisdom around his journey and the state of Hip Hop.
“Hip-hop is young. We’re still growing.” said the Grammy award-winning artist. “Before it was the American Dream: ‘Pull yourself up by your bootstraps. You can make it in America,” he continued in his interview with journalist Rob Markman.
“And then when we start getting in, they tried to lock us out of it. They start inventing words like, you know, ‘capitalist,’ and things like that. You know, we’ve been called ‘****’ and ‘monkeys’ and shit. I don’t care; those words y’all come up with. Y’all gotta come up with stronger words.”
The comments were met with some flack online, with some people calling out the 52-year-old rapper for being out of touch. Others defended the Hip Hop icon, calling him an inspiration.
