The Hip Hop world is known for throwing some pretty epic birthday parties.
For Gunna’s 28th birthday, Lil Baby gifted him a shoebox containing 100k cash. And who could forget ‘Kidchella’, the epic do that Kanye threw for his daughter’s 1st birthday?
But what about a birthday party for Hip Hop itself? Yep, Hip Hop has a birthday! It turns out that the entire genre’s existence can be traced back to one magical night.
The date? August 11th, 1972.
The birthplace? A sweet street party in The Bronx, NYC.
The dad? A DJ named Kool Herc who had an innovative approach using two turntables and a mixer.
Kool’s technique allowed him to isolate and extend the drum break in a given record (aka, ‘the break’), letting the audience enjoy the beats and dance for longer than usual. His approach went down pretty well, and the rest is history!
So if you’ve neglected to throw a party for Hip Hop’s birthday in recent years, don’t feel bad; you can always make up for it with a belated birthday banger this weekend!
